John Elway, Pat Summitt, Barry Rudin to be Honored at 9th Harold Pump Foundation
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (July 14, 2008) -– Super Bowl MVP quarterback John Elway, Hall of Fame college basketball coach Pat Summitt and entrepreneur and civic leader Barry Rudin will be honored by The Harold Pump Foundation as sports greats gather at the ninth annual charity gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 6:30 p.m.. The event benefits the Harold and Carole Pump Department of Radiation Oncology, the Carole Pump Women’s Center and the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. Elway, who starred at Granada Hills High School and Stanford before leading the Denver Broncos to the title in Super Bowl XXXIII, will receive the Inspirational Award at the star-studded event. Summitt, the career victory leader among all coaches in NCAA Division I basketball history and winner of seven women’s NCAA titles at Tennessee , will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Rudin, CEO of Barry’s Ticket Services and very active in support of local charities, will be recognized with the Humanitarian Award. Elway will be the keynote speaker. Prior to the dinner, sports greats will participate in an 18-hole celebrity golf tournament at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita, beginning at 9 a.m. A variety of pro sports celebrities will be involved in both the golf tournament and dinner, including: NBA greats Elgin Baylor, Magic Johnson, Doc Rivers, Isiah Thomas and Bill Walton, baseball stars Eddie Murray, Pete Rose and Ozzie Smith, Clippers’ head coach Mike Dunleavy, UCLA head coach Ben Howland and boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard, as well as many others. Since the event’s inception, The Harold Pump Foundation has raised more than $2.5 million for the treatment and cure of cancer, new technology, cancer screening and education programs for the under-insured and for a family plan for cancer patients at Northridge Hospital. Past Lifetime Achievement honorees include University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, former Texas Tech head coach Bobby Knight, former Oklahoma State head coach Eddie Sutton, former UNLV head coach Jerry Tarkanian, former Louisville head coach Denny Crum, former UCLA head coach John Wooden and Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana. The Harold Pump Foundation, based in Chatsworth , Calif. , is a nonprofit organization started in 2000 by Dana and David Pump in memory of their father, Harold Pump.
