Louisville Women's Soccer Ties UConn 1-1 in 2OT
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Lindsay Boling scored in the 68th minute to tie the game at one, and despite a shot advantage in overtime, the University of Louisville could not net the game winner, finishing in a 1-1 tie with UConn Friday night in Cardinal Park. UConn broke the scoreless deadlock at the 17:30 mark when Elizabeth Eng beat Zoeller from about 12 yards out on the left side to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. It was Eng's first goal of the season. Kate Cunningham, Caitlin Rehder and Kelsey Hunyadi each put shots on net before the Cards looked to even the score in the 34th minute. Hunyadi sent a ball through the box that Ashley Auld dummied on to the feet of Shannon Smyth, who was 1v1 with Labbe. Labbe charged Smyth, forcing a rocket just wide to the left. Louisville held an 8-7 advantage on shots in the first half, an advantage they would see increase to 8-4 in the second half as the Cards controlled scoring chances in the attacking third. The team exchanged scoring chances to open the first 15 minutes of the second half. At 67:21 Boling found a loose ball outside the 18 on the left side and let loose a laser that tucked inside the far post to knot the game at one. It was Boling's team-leading sixth goal of the season. At the 73:00 minute mark, Shannon Leamy nearly put the Cards on top with a close-range finish, but Labbe made the stop. In the first overtime, the Cardinals nearly won the game again when Boling steered a corner from Mallory Lampson past Labbe, but a UConn defender guarding the back line made a team save to preserve the tie. Rehder had her first shot sail high and her second in the second overtime blocked by a Husky defender for the only two shots of the second OT. The Cards outshot UConn 4-0 in extra time and 20-11 for the game. Over 20 former players joined the Cardinals for Alumnae Night and were honored in a halftime ceremony. The Cardinals will host Providence Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET in Cardinal Park before embarking on a season-long four-game road trip that begins next Friday at Rutgers. |
