FLOWERY BRANCH, GA – The Atlanta Falcons today named Matt Ryan the starting quarterback for the regular season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 7, 2008.

Ryan, a graduate of Boston College , was the third overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. Last season, he established school records for 400-yard passing performances in both a career and a season while recording 4,507 passing yards and 31 touchdowns. Ryan’s career 9,313 passing yards placed him third on the Boston College all-time record list behind Doug Flutie and Glenn Foley. His 31 touchdown passes last season also broke the old school season-record of 27 by Flutie in 1984.

“We have evaluated Matt through OTAs, mini-camp, training camp and over the course of three preseason games,” said Head Coach Mike Smith. “After reviewing Matt’s progress, we feel like he has won the starting job.”

Ryan, who will start in Atlanta ’s preseason finale at Baltimore , said he looks forward to playing the Lions on September 7.

“I think you have to take starting in stride and keep working hard the same way I have been,” said quarterback Matt Ryan. “I will keep doing what I have done to get to this point. It is only the beginning. I am excited to get things started.”

In three preseason contests, Ryan has completed 32 of 52 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for an 80.4 passer rating. Last Friday against Tennessee , he earned his first start under center and finished the game having completed 15 of 21 passes (71.4 pct.) for 102 yards, one touchdown and a 97.7 passer rating.
