Kids of all ages invited to training camp for a day of fun, fitness and football

ALBANY, NY – The New York Giants and the American Heart Association are teaming up for “Youth Day,” presented by f.y.e., at Giants Training Camp, held at the University at Albany, on Monday, August 11, 2008. Numerous activities for youth are planned around the day’s afternoon practice (2:40p.m. to 4:40 p.m.) and will include after-practice speeches from Giants players about the importance of physical fitness as well as other important messages for the young audience. Since this day is all about young Giants fans, there will also be giveaways, face painters, an expanded football inflatables area, skill contests, staged drills and more!

Youth Day is open school-age children, as well as summer camp programs.

Promoting physical fitness is the primary goal in the community for the New York Giants and the National Football League. To accomplish this mission, the Giants have partnered with the American Heart Association to bring the “What Moves U” program to the tri-state area’s middle schools, allowing teachers to incorporate physical fitness into their existing daily lesson plans. Giants players, including program spokesman, Eli Manning, encourage kids to play actively every day through public service announcements, school visits, and in-school materials.

The day will also focus on proper hydration, featuring the Gatorade Beat the Heat program. The program highlights the importance of keeping hydrated during summer activities, and features a partnership with the Kendrick Fincher Foundation. This organization was named for a young football player who died from heatstroke during football two-a-days and is dedicated to heat safety education. Look for the Gatorade kiosks where fans can donate money to support proper hydration and receive a free item.

“The Giants are shining an important light on the issue of children’s health,” said Schoolhouse Road pediatrician Dr. Caitrin Navarro, a member of the American Heart Association’s Capital Region Advisory Board. “Today, about 16 percent of children and teens in the U.S. are overweight, but it can be stopped. For each hour of vigorous exercise, you gain two hours of life expectancy. Youth Day, with its games and activities, is a reminder that exercise can be fun. For kids to see their heroes in action reinforces the message that much more strongly.”
