Doctors Expecting Full Recovery

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., Sept. 26, 2008 – The Sacramento Monarchs today announced that guard Chelsea Newton underwent successful surgery this morning to repair cartilage damage and remove loose bodies from her left ankle. Monarchs Team Doctor, Kirk Lewis, performed the surgery. It is projected that she will be out four to six weeks; a complete recovery is expected.

Newton originally sprained her left ankle on July 24, 2008 against the Phoenix Mercury at ARCO Arena. Further evaluation and testing revealed she had a bone spur and loose bodies causing her pain which could only be relieved through surgery.

A four-year WNBA veteran, Newton has played three seasons with Sacramento (2005, 2007 and 2008) and one season with Chicago (2006). She was originally selected by the franchise as the 22nd overall pick of the 2005 WNBA Draft. For the 2008 season, Newton appeared in 26 games and averaged 4.5 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 15.1 minutes per game. During the Monarchs playoffs run she played in all three games, averaging 4.3 points, 0.7 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.7 steals and 14.7 minutes per outing.

Through her four WNBA seasons, Newton has played in 121 games and averaged 20.3 minutes, 5.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.1 blocks per game. Additionally, the 2005 WNBA All-Defensive Second Team and WNBA All-Rookie team honoree was an integral part of the Monarchs 2005 WNBA Championship team.
