SPM Quick Take With Sylvia Fowles
SPM Sportspage had the opportunity to speak with Chicago Sky rookie center and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Sylvia Fowles briefly after a recent Chicago Sky victory over the conference-leading Detroit Shock. SPM: Congratulations on your gold medal. SF: Thank you. SPM: Could you tell us what it felt like walking out on the Beijing court for the first time wearing an Olympic jersey? SF: It was a joy to be there, and with the teammates we had. To go out there and compete to the best of our ability, and knowing that we had that "U.S.A." across our chests, meant a lot. SPM: You had some players like Lisa Leslie going for her fourth gold medal and you going for your first, and what I am sure will be many more. Could you talk about the chemistry of the team and maybe what Anne Donovan told the team? SF: Coach Donovan did not tell us anything. It was up to us. We knew what we wanted to accomplish. We made it our business to try and get close to each other within the time we did have. SPM: What was it like having your mom see you play there in Beijing? SF: It was good. I am happy that she had the opportunity to come out. That was her first international trip to see me compete. She had a good time, I had a good time. I am just happy I had the opportunity for her to be there. SPM: You had an outstanding Olympic run (13.4 points per game, 64 percent field goal percentage, and 8.3 rebounds per game). Could you talk a little about your play? SF: It was very different. My teammates and coaches expected a lot out of me. They got me ready for the games. Once we started playing it was quite easy so I just went out and executed what they asked me to do. |
