Dan Lefevour is helping take the Chippewa football program to the next level. Last December Lefevour became the second player in Division I FBS history to pass for over 3,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season (Vince Young of the University of Texas was the first). Recently I sat down with Dan and talked with him about the upcoming college football season. Here are some thoughts from the Central Michigan quarterback:

Q: When you are put in the same category as a Heisman Trophy winner (Young), what first comes to mind when you hear that?

A: There is a lot more that goes into it besides just individual success. He [Young] had a lot of great guys around him. It’s not just one guy. I’m sure he feels the same way. That’s why this sport is so great...it takes 11 guys all being on the same page. So it would be foolish of me to take all the credit for all the stats that I have achieved.

Central Michigan will head down to Georgia to take on the Bulldogs in their second game of the season.

Q: The team has a great opportunity heading down to Georgia this season. How’s the team looking forward to that?

A: We’re looking forward to it, but first things first; we’ve got to take care of Eastern Illinois in our first game. I hope we learned our lesson last year with Purdue that we can play with some big schools, so I hope we didn’t forget that experience. We’ve lost some key players but we have to keep moving forward instead of backwards.

Q: Was it a tough transition when former coach Brian Kelly left after the 2006 season?

A: It was a tough transition not knowing who the coach was but as soon as I knew who it was…no, not at all. This guy recruited me under Brain Kelly’s staff. I committed when he was a coach here. So again, not at all was it tough.

Q: What was it like when you first started getting national attention from the media and scouts, and did you get treated differently around campus?

A: I didn’t get treated differently around campus. I don’t think it’s at that point but it all kind of changed at the first moment I started playing at Boston College. There was a lot of pressure at that time too because it was put up or shut up. It was my first game and I had a decent game, but it was only one game and I just had to keep it going from there.

Q: What different leadership qualities do you possess and bring to the team?

A: One of my independent studies I took this summer was Media as a Leader. Things that I bring to the table are my knowledge and my trustworthiness with my teammates, so when they see that I am exuding confidence it helps them act and play more confidently. I do think I need to work at being more a vocal leader though. I think I’m good at leading by example but we have a lot of those guys. We need more guys that are more vocal guys, ones that can be more inspirational. I think vocal, inspirational leaders are a need on our team right now so I would like to be like that.

Q: How hard is it balancing academics and your football workouts?

A: It can be tough but I’m a type of personality that always has to be busy. I don’t like sitting around much. I went through some hard times in trying to get work done here and there but I think everyone goes through it. I think you appreciate it more when you finally get it down. As far as school wise, I’m on the decline. I’m almost done with school…it’s just football now.

Q: Looking forward to this season, are there certain goals and expectations the team has set?

A: Winning the MAC championship is another expectation again. If we’re not playing to win the MAC, then there’s no reason to be playing. But if that’s all we’re playing for, then I think guys are in the wrong program. The next goal is to [become] a top 25 program. Last year we beat almost every team in the MAC and that didn’t get us there, so we need to start beating some non-conference BCS teams and [achieve] some double-digit win seasons.
